Post-Conference Activity

We plan a post-conference trip to three tourist places in the Central Region of Ghana. This trip is scheduled for August 24, 2024, a day after the three-day conference.

The Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park is a protected area of rainforest and home to endangered mammals such as forest elephants, bongo antelopes and primates like the Diana monkey. The park is rich in butterflies and birds, including African grey parrots and hornbills. It also has the Canopy Walkway, suspended 30 meters above the ground, and provides treetop views of the forest.

The Elmina castle

St George’s Castle, a Unesco heritage site, was built as a trading post by the Portuguese in 1482, and captured by the Dutch in 1637. It was expanded when slaves replaced gold as the major object of commerce, with storerooms converted into dungeons. The informative tour (included in the entry fee) takes you to the grim dungeons, punishment cells, Door of No Return and the turret room where the British imprisoned the Ashanti king, Prempeh I, for four years. https://visitghana.com/attractions/elmina-castle.

The Cape Coast Castle
Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle is the largest of the buildings which contain the legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Like most ancient fortifications in Ghana, Cape Coast Castle played a significant role in the gold and slave trades. Butalso, two significant contributions were made here: the arrival of Christianity, and the establishment of the first formal education system through Castle Schools. https://visitghana.com/attractions/cape-coast-castle.
